Crosley and Burger Records (not) at SXSW

March 10, 2020 | Music

*Unfortunately, SXSW has been cancelled this year due to Covid-19 (sounds like a cool band name).  We are super bummed, but wanted to still post this blog for educational purposes.  See you next year SXSW!

South By Southwest — known as SXSW to the cool kids — is a 10-day conference dedicated to film, music, and technology. Held in Austin, Texas, SXSW celebrates the intersection of art and business. This year, Crosley Brands is sponsoring Burger Records’ ninth annual Burgermania event, featuring more than 90 musical acts, including The Flytraps, Hammered Satin, and Rollingchild. Whether you’re interested in learning more about the entertainment business or just want to enjoy the seven-day music festival, SXSW is the place to be.

The History of SXSW

Way back in 1986, when cassette tapes were all the rage, a few music lovers met in the offices of The Austin Chronicle to discuss Austin’s entertainment scene. The founders of SXSW were focused on showcasing the Austin music scene, but they wanted to be as inclusive as possible. As a result, they decided to invite a variety of artists from around the country.

The first SXSW event took place in 1987, with 700 attendees. By 1994, the festival also included film and interactive media events. Now, more than 30 years since its inception, SXSW is a massive festival drawing creatives, fans, and entrepreneurs from around the world.

The Music Festival

The music festival, taking place from March 16 to 22, is a place for attendees to discover talent, network, and enjoy a great show. Artists from all genres and hometowns play at SXSW, with over 2,000 performers from more than 60 countries.

SXSW works with record labels and other companies in the music business to present special showcases of featured artists. Burgermania, the Burger Records’ showcase sponsored by Crosley, takes place on March 21 and 22 at Hotel Vegas in Austin. Other artist showcases take place around the city in parks, clubs, and bars.

Other SXSW Festivals

SXSW puts on film and comedy festivals. The film festival, which runs from March 13 to 21, highlights emerging artists in documentaries, dramas, comedies, and more. Screenings take place in various locations, including the Paramount Theatre, the ZACH Theatre, and the SXSW Film Theater at the Austin Convention Center.

Initially, the comedy festival was just one day long. Now, the festival spans nine days, taking place between March 13 and 21, showcasing both established comics and emerging stars.
