Music Monday - Brand New - Deja Entendu

February 26, 2016 | Music

Like most people, my music tastes were somewhat predefined by my family. My mom brought me up on The Beatles’Rubber Soul, and my dad on Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. But most of my adolescent music came from my big brother, Matt.  This was the age semi-before file-sharing, when you would download a “techno” song on KaZaAa and it’d be Darude’s Sandstorm every damn time. Emo was big in the way that indie could be big; Sample CDs had to be ordered from the back of track lists and mailed in. Matt would get super pumped about his Emo is Awesome CDs coming in the mail. And me? I was folded up in the back seat, with my chin to my knees and my legs squashed to my chest. (Which was interesting in a school uniform skirt, let me tell you.) And even now, sitting at a desk, listening to Brand New sticks me right back in my brother’s Metro, and in a really good way.

Brand New’s Deja Entendu came out in 2003 (over 10 years ago?!) and yet still holds up really well. Some emo bands sound like shoe-gazey wailing to a modern palette, but Brand New still sounds fresh and meaningful. It’s one of those albums you may not remember every word, but you know the guitar licks like the back of your hand.

Deja Entendu is being re-released on vinyl and will soon be in our shop! Or, of course, shop local and head to your Local Record Shop to pick it up! It’s a beautiful heavy gram copy.
