The Run for the Roses

May 06, 2016 | Blog

So, writing this on the first Friday in May, I should, by all social laws of Louisville, Kentucky, not be here in the office. That's right y'all, it's Derby Week, and specifically today is Oaks Day, the race prior to the Kentucky Derby. Oaks is actually a legit holiday in the city. Most schools and businesses take today off so that employees can either go to the tracks or get Derby weekend started early. At least all of us in the office are proper Kentucky people who get hype when horses run in …

7 Records to Re-vinyl-ize Your Mom's Record Collection

May 06, 2016 | Blog

(Shout to Natalia Mohl’s incredible photography- go check out her dreamy photos at wildbindi, based in Sydney, Australia! With love from a transient Melbournite.) So say you’ve gotten yourself a record player. Awesome, A+. If you’re like me and part of the dreaded “millenial” generation, when you brought this up to your parents you might have been met with a kind of confusion and bemusement. Music Monday - Beck - Morning Phase

April 18, 2016 | Music

Good morning! To be fair, we’re still a bit groggy from Record Store Day. (The party lasts a while and we’re in brewing country, don’t judge us.) For sleepy Monday mornings, it seems completely appropriate to spin Beck’s 2014 album, Morning Phase. If you compare Morning Phase to, say, Modern Guilt from 2014, you’ll notice there’s a distinct lack of electric guitar, exchanged instead for gentle acoustic. It's not entirely unheard of for Beck- Morning Phase's spiritual sibling, 2002's Sea Change- …

How Big, How Bold, How Beautiful - Florence and the Machine

March 28, 2016 | Music

Even years after the triumphant Ceremonials, you couldn’t turn a stone over without hearing the soulful sound of Florence Welch belting out Dog Days one more time. It was rise of flower crowns and fire dances, and always brings to me images of the wide Australian sky filled with fading sparks. Still, it’s been four years since then, and after letting the Marina and the Diamonds of the world have a bit of the spotlight, autumn goddess Florence returns in a wave of crisp leaves and soaring vocals.…
